History of the Mindfulness Center

Top researchers and educators in the mindfulness field came together to address the need for methodologically rigorous research and education.

The Mindfulness Center at Brown University was established in 2017, in collaboration with the Brown University School of Public Health, the Warren Alpert Medical School and the Contemplative Studies Initiative.

We graduated the first cohort of MPH Mindfulness concentration students world-wide in 2023, with a graduating class size of four students.

From 2017 to 2023, Mindfulness Center faculty generated $39.3M in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, $3.7M in foundation and philanthropic funding, 106 peer-reviewed mindfulness publications, and four mindfulness books.

Associate Director Shufang Sun

The Mindfulness Center has strategically fostered key areas of research and innovation across faculty and is considered a leader in Health Equity, Mental Health, Mobile Health, Cardiometabolic Health, Implementation Science, Adverse Events and Trauma Sensitivity. Growth of expertise and innovation in these areas would not be possible without a center that fosters intentional and purposeful collaboration and academic community. These areas are often cross-department and cross-school, and utilize diverse methodological approaches from varied disciplines, such as mixed methods research, epidemiological studies, intervention research, and community-based participatory research.
